Saturday, May 25, 2002, 8:31 p.m. Hi, this is Denny Granstand in Yakima,
Saturday evening. I got a call from Leslie Wahl, who's a member of
Yakima Audubon, today saying that a BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER was found at
Hardy Canyon in the Wenas today. Tyler Davis and his friend Brendan
evidently found it. To find it, go to Hardy Canyon. Follow the road
straight - I believe it goes in the southwest direction - until it
curves more to the south. When you finally come out of the trees,
there's a hill on the left and trees on the right. When you come out of
the trees, there is a bluebird box, the first of a series of bluebird
boxes. From that bluebird box, you go approximately 200 yards. Shortly
after the bluebird box, the trail splits. You keep to the left. Sooner
or later, you come to a lone Ponderosa pine tree. Right after that tree,
there is a little rock cairn - stack of rocks that Leslie and her
husband made. That is where the GNATCATCHER was seen. Tyler seemed to
think it was acting like it was on territory, so it's possible it has
been there a while and will stay there a while. My phone number is
509-453-2500. The instructions are written on an e-mail to Tweeters that
I just sent a little bit ago. Bye.

Friday, May 24, 2002, 8:10 p.m. John O'Connell 360-299-4375. Today in
Monroe, at approximately 11:45 a.m. on Lake Tye, which is immediately
west of Fryelands Boulevard Southeast, there were two BLACK TERNS. Thanks.

Friday, May 24, 2002, 7:03 p.m. Hi, this is Bill Tweit. Today, Friday, I
found a colony of BANK SWALLOWS along I-5 at Milepost 52 in Cowlitz
County on the cut bank that's easily visible off the west side of the
freeway over by the banks of the Cowlitz River. It had at least 20 BANK
SWALLOWS as well as a LAZULI BUNTING nearby. As far as I'm aware, the
only way to view it is by pulling off on the right-hand shoulder of the
freeway, which, of course, I don't advise. Good birding.

Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 4:23 p.m. Patricia Lott, 206-362-6035. I
listened to the reports and realized I'm not the first to see the SNOWY
EGRET in the Edmonds Marsh. It was at 3 o'clock today, the 22nd. I saw
it from Station 3 looking west. It was almost back by the trees on the
far western edge of the marsh, doing some fishing and flying a little
bit back in there.

Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 2:07 p.m. Hello, this is Kraig Kemper,
206-789-9255, reporting for Wednesday, May 22nd. Between 12:30 and 1,
the COSTA'S HUMMINGBIRD was seen frequenting the hummingbird feeders at
Mike Wile's house in Redmond. Address: 7416 245th Way. Directions are
good on Tweeters. Might be best to call Mike and his wife at
425-868-4679 for permission to view the bird. Also at 1:45 p.m., I
relocated the SNOWY EGRET at the Edmonds Marsh per the posting by Greg
Toffic and Dennis Duffy. Thank you.

Wednesday, May 22, 2002, 7:42 a.m. Hi, this is Greg Toffic at
206-684-4836. And I got a call last night from Dennis Duffy, who
reported a SNOWY EGRET at the Edmonds Marsh. I was unable to get over
there last night, but I went there this morning, and at about 6:30, the
bird was very clearly visible, sitting up, four feet or so, in the reeds
above the water surface, on the far side of the marsh from the first
viewing platform by the parking lot. Able to be seen naked eye very well
and identified , but a scope certainly brought the bird into very good
view, so thank you Dennis. Good luck and good birding.

CORRECTION: The name of Michael Priebe was misspelled in the May 10 -
May 19 Washington Bird Box transcription. Here is the correct version:

Thursday, May 16, 2002, 6:49 p.m. Michael Priebe (NOT Preba)
206-623-7798. This morning along the Everett Waterfront, about a half
mile north of the Everett Boat Launch, there were two pairs of PURPLE
MARTINS exploring nest boxes visible from Marine View Drive. About a
half mile north of that, there was a drake NORTHERN PINTAIL. At Legion
Memorial Park in the little arboretum, there was a small flock of RED
CROSSBILLS. Thanks. That's it.

Birdbox last checked 11:45 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002.
