Subject: [BIRDWEST] WHITE-TAILED KITES Using Golf Courses?

Fellow CalBirders and Bird Westers:

I am trying to determine if any of you have observed White-tailed
Kites (kites) using golf courses, golf course margins, or rough-areas
for normal activities, including nesting, perching and/or foraging. I
am also interested in hearing about observations of kites using other
suburban park-like habitats on a regular basis.

I am reviewing a site in coastal southern California, consisting of
old fields, limited willow riparian and sage scrub habitats that is
occupied by breeding White-tailed Kites. I am aware of typical kite
habitats in San Diego County (they actually use a wide variety of
habitats), including some fairly developed areas that appear to have the
right combination of foraging, nesting and perching/roosting conditions
are available.

The ultimate question is whether or not kites are likely to survive
construction, maintenance and recreational activities associated with a
fairly typical southern California golf course that retains a fair
amount of existing habitats (including perching and nesting trees) used
by kites. I am aware of some ongoing work being done in central
California, addressing kite use of "non-typical" habitats (not yet
published).

This is by no means a poll, but a legitimate request for
observations of White-tailed Kites using habitats like golf courses.
Your observations may assist in predicting the viability of an area for
kite use in the future. Any assistance would be appreciated and I would
be glad to summarize the results of response back to the list servs.
