Thank you for your message about development in Kiwanis Ravine and the
potential cutting of a cedar tree with impacts on heron nests. I am pleased
to be able to report to you that an agreement has been reached that will
protect the heron chicks by delaying the cutting until after the chicks have
fledged and left the nest around August 1.

While most of the heron nests in Kiwanis Ravine are in trees that are
protected, herons shift their nests from year to year, and there are still
issues relating to development in this area and the long-run impact on herons
and other wildlife. However, the loss of this particular tree, while
regrettable, will have the least impact of the alternatives proposed for the
development of this parcel. With the agreement to hold off construction
until August 1, the heron colony is unlikely to be impacted by this action.
