Subject: quick question about common snipes

Daniel Bastaja posting for Mon. Nov. 4th, 2002. I don't think Common Snipe
are particularly gregarious, but I have noticed that they will congregate in
the best feeding areas during migration. At Willband Creek Park in
Abbotsford, B.C., I once had 63 of them together, lined up on a strip of mud
between the reeds and the water. And that was only the birds I could
see....probably a lot more hidden in the grass. Most Snipe seem to migrate
through the south coastal area of B.C. around mid to late October but,
because of the mild climate, a few hang around all winter. My experience has
been that, during that Dec./ Jan./ Feb. mid-winter period, Snipe are
uncommon but of regular occurrence. Probably the reason they are not seen
more during this time is the difficulty of spotting them in the vast, brown,
muddy farm fields of winter.
Regards,
Daniel Bastaja
