While water quality sampling on Lake Union this morning I spotted a northern
fulmar about 200 yards south of Gasworks Park. I asked our boat skipper,
John Blaine to turn around for an additional look. The bird is in a light
phase and appeared to have an injured right leg. Bob Kruger attempted to net
the bird, but it proved too wily for us in our 43 foot boat. I took numerous
photos, and will download them later today. We saw the bird from close range
for about ten or fifteen minutes; the tube-nose was clearly visible. The
fulmar was last seen flying toward the east side of Gasworks Park in mid
channel, about 930 am.
I used to see hundreds of thousands of fulmars when I was a fishing observer
in the Bering Sea; I never thought I would run into one on Lake Union!
