MARKED TRUMPETER SWANS INFORMATION REQUESTED

A Trumpeter Swan Reintroduction Project was initiated in 1996 by the
Wildlife Management Program of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes
of the Flathead Indian Reservation. Recent activities include the
development of a captive propagation project, in cooperation with the
Trumpeter Swan Fund at Jackson, Wyoming. The first 34 captive-reared
trumpeter swans that hatched in 2000 and 2001 were released in July of
2002 on the Flathead Indian Reservation, located in west-central Montana.

As autumn progresses, these swans will likely migrate to the southwest
into northern Idaho and Washington or to the south into southwestern
Montana and eastern Idaho. The swan?s chosen migration route is an
important consideration for this reintroduction project and, as a result,
all of the swans have been marked to facilitate observations during
migration. Each is fitted with a red neck collar and a red leg band, in
addition to standard Bird Banding Laboratory aluminum leg bands. Each
swan?s neck collar and leg band has a separate alpha-numeric code.
Fifteen of the swans are also fitted with satellite radio transmitters.

The Tribal Wildlife Management Program requests assistance from local
conservation officers, wildlife biologists, bird enthusiasts and others
who may observe one of these marked swans during their autumn or spring
migration or during the winter. The requested information includes the
following:

Date of observation
Location of observation
Status and activity of the swan (alive, dead, feeding, etc.)
Presence of other swans in the vicinity

If you observe any of these marked trumpeter swans or have questions
regarding this project, please contact:
