Lest anybody think that I am suggesting that the eastern
_celata_ form is either common or straight forward to identify...

Of the 400 or so (mostly spring migrant) Orange-crowns I have
handled in the last 15 years on the north coast of Oregon,
about 70% were _lutescens_ and 30% were _orestera_. I have
only caught 2 birds which I would be inclined to call _celata_
and you'll notice that the one in the picture I posted had the
qualifier "probable".

As to Dunn and Garrett...
The Orange-crowned plates in both of my copies do not show
show the breeding _orestera_ as nearly gray enough. This
could be an artifact of the printing or it could be an
artifact of the museum references used in making the drawings.
These should be, by my reading of Pyle, more like _celata_
than _lutescens_.

It should also be noted that _orestera_ has come in and out
and back into the taxonomy of Orange-crowns. Gabrielson and
Jewett complain quite a bit about the AOU dropping _orestera_
prior to the publication of _Birds of Oregon_. They were
not at all certain what to make of eastside Orange-crowns.
