On November 12, 2002 in the early afternoon, a dipper dipped incessantly =
among the spawning salmon and stinky carcasses in Stimson Creek which =
empties into Hood Canal. This is a shallow creek that runs along =
Elfendahl Pass Road into Hood Canal about five miles down Highway 300 =
(Northshore Rd) out of Belfair. From the highway, walk up the road to =
the point that the stream first crosses under Elfendahl. Go two hundred =
more feet up the road. Look into the stream on left side of road. If =
you have time for a walk, do keep walking up this little-used road for a =
fine hike among big-leaf maples, heron, stream restoration structures, =
an exuberant memorial. On Vashon Island, Shinglemill Creek, another =
shallow, salmon-bearing creek has a dipper that has been sighted for =
many years. So while dippers are not rare, to find them locally as a =
perennial presence and in the same reaches of the stream, has been an =
added sighting for our salmon counters. Ann Spiers, Vashon Island Wa =
