Hi all,
I had a raptor in my yard this afternoon. It came in after the sparrows
feeding on the ground, but didn't catch any so stood still on the lawn for a
minute, very frustrated, and no sparrow offered itself again so it flew off.
It seemed a little smaller than a crow. The overall impression was of a
charcoal/slate back with a buff (cream) chest and abdomen. It had a
charcoal hood and the charcoal extended well below the eyes. The chest and
front had no striping or dappling - it was a solid cream color. The only
flecking was in the wings when it flew off. I believe its tail flared wide
and flat at the bottom on takeoff. Was this a peregrine falcon, arctic
type? That was the closest picture I could find. Any ideas? Can you refer
me to a site with good pics? The stance and beak were similar to the
kestril pictures - short beak, upright stance. Head rather largish/rounded
on top for body, dark on top and sides like falcon. Thanks for any help.
It was exciting to see, but hope it's moved on. Probably will be seen
tomorrow in south Everett, Mukilteo area.
