Hi Birding Friends:
I went outside at 6:30 this morning and heard a Great Horned Owl calling
over and over from various spots about 1/2 block away. I never could see it
flying through the big trees. Nice clear morning, just before the thick fog
rolled in. The call sounded like, "Who's Awake, Me Too-who. With that
added last hoot, I assume this is a female. This is the first GHOW that I
have heard in my neighborhood. I wonder if its presence will make a
difference to the two Barred Owls that moved in here last spring?
I wanted to listen some more as she continued to hoot for several minutes,
but my suburban neighborhood woke up, the garbage trucks arrived, and an
airplane flew over. The woods that start just above our street are part of
the buyout area beneath the Seatac flight path. My estimate is those woods,
connecting to DesMoines Creek Park comprise a greenbelt area of 200 acres or
so of woods and fields.
Now I guess I have to find my hardhat, and go owling one of these evenings
or nights. I REALLY don't want to be attacked by an owl like some people on
Tweeters have been. Whooo needs that?
