After discussing it some more, here are some further hints for anyone with any ideas from my first posting.

The birds' overall body shape was narrow. My wife initially thought it seemed somewhat Kingbird-like, but with a much narrower bill. And according to the NAS CD-ROM's we have, none of them have calls like this. The bird stood very upright on the branch in the tree, and there was no barring on the undersides, and when it flew to the bush, the undersides of the wings were pale like the rest of the undersides. Gina even looked at woodpeckers, but this bird had no darker colors on the wings, and the calls are all wrong. This was Sunday afternoon on her way home from a shift at the Zoo, midday with good light, but a bad angle looking up into the tree with no binoc's handy. A bird like a wren (someone suggested Bewicks) has a similar bill shape, but wrong body, call, etc. As I told a couple of folks, we have pretty much eliminated all of the usual Seattle suspects. We don't know what it is, but we pretty much know what it ain't.
