Hi Tweeters,

After warming up with a latte at a nearby Starbuck?s, the fog had lifted and
I decided to stop back at Juanita to finish the circuit Brian Bell and I had
started earlier. Almost immediately, a Pileated Woodpecker flew overhead,
landing briefly in a nearby evergreen. Along the approach to the causeway,
another mixed flock of sparrows (Golden-crowned, Lincoln?s, Song, Fox)
foraged in the berries; a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers played follow-the-leader
from poplar to poplar; chickadees, kinglets, American Goldfinches, and a
Bewick?s Wren who thought he was a Creeper flitted in the alders and
cottonwoods. Out on the water I added Canvasback, Lesser Scaup and Hooded
Merganser to the 8 duck species we had seen earlier, and at the North end,
found 9 Wilson?s Snipe feeding on the mudflats. On the return to the
parking lot, an adult Cooper?s Hawk flapped and then soared above me,
ignoring the 2 crows that attempted to harass it.

For the morning, a total of 50 species?2 of them new birds for the Park
(Thayer?s Gull and Swamp Sparrow). What a great day!

P.S. I?m a Volunteer Ranger at Juanita, and am keeping a database of
species seen (135, and counting!). I?d appreciate learning of any unusual
or interesting sightings, both past and in the future. Thanks.
