This morning after birding a little bit at the
Edmond's fishing pier, I decided to head north to the
flats. It was a good thing I hadn't gone earlier
because it all would have been so foggy as to make it
less rewarding. I birded the flats from just south of
Stanwood up through Fir Island and then eventually to
Samish Island. All in all it was a very rewarding
day. I started with my first falcon being a Kestrel
on Boe Rd. south of Stanwood and several harriers and
Red-tails in this area as well. I had a Merlin at the
Stanwood Sewage Ponds but nothing else of note there.
The next highlight was a Northern Shrike on Maupin Rd,
just south of its intersection with Rawlins on Fir
Island. The previously reported Rusty Blackbird was
present on Hwy 20 near Farm to Market Rd. Just north
of 20 on Farm to Market Rd. is where I encountered my
first of 3 peregrines of the day. From Farm to Market
Rd., I headed west on D'arcy road and then north on
Bayvew-Edison Rd. about half way between D'arcy and
Sullivan Roads on Bayview-Edison I found an adult
Prairie Falcon. At the west 90 there were atleast 3
Short-eared Owls along with about 10 Northern Harriers
and 2 Rough-legged Hawks. Also present was a second
Northern Shrike. I also saw the Tropical Kingbird
near the liquor store in Edison as well as a second
Kestrel later on D'arcy road and two peregrines near
the base of Samish Island.
