IN 5TH CENTRAL COAST BIRDING RALLY



The team of Brad Hines, Becky Hoban, Mark Holmgren and Dave Compton narrowly edged a San Luis Obispo County team in the Open Class competition by one species. Battling dense fog for much of the morning, the team nonetheless recorded a very respectable 104 species birding Waller Park, the Santa Maria River mouth and Oso Flaco.

The day's best find, a Pacific Golden Plover was flushed from the river estuary by the SLO County team of Brad Schram, Tom Edell, Mike Stiles and Bill Bouton. In the Hobby Class, Corrine and Dan Ardoin teamed with Cher Hollingworth to win that competition with the 77 species they located in three Santa Ynez Valley sites.

The Sunday Big Day at the ponds on VAFB attracted over thirty birders, many who did not participate in the Saturday activities. Despite the heat, 82 species of birds were located in what turned out to be a six hour event at the Ponds on VAFB. There are not many sites on the Central Coast Birding Trail that can produce these kind of numbers. Among the species was a Broad-winged Hawk and several Common Poorwills, the latter seen at the Ponds for the first time. The hawk marked the second Pond's sighting for this raptor.

Next year's Rally is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of October 3-5. Mark your calendars now. La Purisima Audubon remains committed to collaborating to establish the Central Coast Birding Trail on a par with other trails across the country. We have recently updated the trail map for Santa Barbara County and this revised edition is available through the Santa Maria Chamber of Commerce and Visitor's Bureau.
