Good afternoon tweets,

I got out to school a little early on a Sunday to see what could be seen in the forest. If you don't know, Shoreline Community College at 162nd and Greenwood has some very nice forested habitats surrounding it. Early, mid and late successional forests types, and over by Boeing Creek, there are actually still stands of old growth forest.

Anyway, I like to get out there and bird and mammal watch. It's one of the only areas close to Seattle that you can see large concentrations of Douglas Squirrels (Chickaree). Eastern grays are few, except on the campus itself. I went down to the north "Greenwood" parking lot and walked the length of it and into the forested area just beyond. I saw quite a number of different creatures today, although most are fairly common. My only disappointment was not seeing the Barred Owls I often see (they breed here every year). Here's my list:

Pileated Woodpecker (very close ~ 15 feet)

Hairy Woodpecker (even closer at same time but different tree as Pileated)

Ruby-crowned Kinglet (along with Golden-crowned, and Bushtit, very thick, often 20+ at a time)

Golden-crowned Kinglet

Bushtit

Hutton's Vireo (two of them, first of the season for me)

Orange-crowned Warbler

Yellow-rumped Warbler

Anna's Hummingbird (a number of males singing and displaying, perhaps defending territories?)

Dark-eyed "Oregon" Junco (large groups, singing and foraging)

Winter Wren

Bewick's Wren

Spotted Towhee (there are a lot of these around calling, and flying and in the underfloor)

American Robin

Black-capped Chickadee (Tons of Chickadees)

Chestnut-backed Chickadee(a few mixed in with their cousins)

Northwestern Crow (occasionally calling from above as they flew over)

Raven (One big one flew over Krawking)

Cooper's Hawk (perched in a tree almost back up to the campus)

Red-breasted Nuthatch (The beeping is incessant)

Brown Creeper

Song Sparrow

European House Sparrow

House Finch

Steller's Jay (adding their cacophony)

Canada Geese (a flock flew over early-I can count it!)

Douglas Squirrel (Chickaree ~ as many as 8 in one area about 80' x 80')

Eastern Gray Squirrel (only near the school and upper parking lot-wimps!)

Deer Mouse (cute little bugger feeding on seeds)

Opossum (trying to be quiet moving through the tree-failing miserably)
