The Surf Scoter invasion of this fall is a real event. If it was merely
observer effort, we'd see a similar increase in WW Scoter and LT Duck
reports. These have been about average. Surf Scoters have averaged about 20
per year in e. Washington over the last decade. The previous published daily
maximum for e. Washington seems to be 17. So yes, this event -- with its
flocks of 40+ -- is truly unusual.

So enjoy it and revel in what it might mean.
