Hi Tweeters,

On Wednesday I saw an Eurasion Widgeon on Cavanaugh Ponds in Renton. ?It was a little scruffy looking, maybe still molting. ?Some of the American Widgeon drakes are looking good now. I also saw the first Ringneck Ducks for the ponds for me this fall. There has been an incredible amount of beaver activity at the ponds and though I have not talked to the biologist temporarily living there yet, I suspect they have blocked some of the sockeye salmon's usual route into the ponds from the Cedar River. Some have been known to spawn in the ponds every fall. I haven't noticed salmon in the ponds yet this year.

Since I am usually asked, here is where the ponds are located. About halfway between Renton and Maple Valley off highway 169 (Maple Valley highway). Turn into Riverbend Mobile Home Park on 174th St. The ponds are on the left in an unmarked King County park. There is a dirt road that leads down to the River and many short trails to the left around the ponds.

I saw my first ever Hermit Thrush down by the river twice about a week and half ago but have not seen it since. It was bathing both days and putting on a nice show for me so I had a real chance to identify it.
