Today Ruth and Patrick Sullivan and Roger Orness and I scouted out Wahkiakum
Co. for tomorrows WOS field trip.

Julia Butler Hansen NWR started out with the Black Phoebe calling repeatedly
around the headquarters building. Other highlights included 17 White-tailed
Kites (11 of which were on the refuge with the others between the refuge and
Rosburg), 2 Merlins, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, 1 Hutton's Vireo, and 1 Ruddy
Duck.

At Altoona we were greatly surprised to find Brown Pelicans away from the
immediate coast. They are rare in Wahkiakum Co. and none of us had ever
seen them here before. Other good birds here included: Pelagic Cormorants,
Surf and White-winged Scoters to make us feel like we were at the beach.
There were 1000's of Scaup, mainly Greaters in Gray's Bay.

Total species seen were 68 species when we all split going different
directions around 2 pm.

I tried for the Tropical Kingbird and it was not to be seen.
