Deer Park, in Olympic National Park east of Hurricane Ridge, is the best
place I've found for blue grouse -- I've never seen less than a half
dozen, often surprisingly close up, any time I've been there. Also, of
course, Olympic marmots and Olympic blacktail deer. It's at the top of a
narrow, twisting road with spectacular views, and some of the best sunsets
on the West Coast. But it closes early when it snows, and doesn't open
again until well into the following summer. So check with ONP to find out
if it's open. If not, Hurricane Ridge may be.
