Hello Tweets,

This afternoon on our way back from the Fernhill Wetlands in Oregon my
mother and I birded the Vancouver Lake area of southern Clark Co. between
1:30pm-2:30pm. We checked three locations in the immediate area of Vancouver
Lake with a few species of note to mention below in the order visited. Most
notable was a single CLARK'S GREBE amongst a flock of 8 Western Grebes 30-35
yards off the Flushing Channel at Vancouver Lake and 1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS
with 20 Long-billed Dowitchers at the north end of Post Office Lake. The
Lesser Yellowlegs was briefly, but well observed in our spotting scope as it
mainly foraged alone, but with nearby Long-billed Dowitchers and appeared to
show feeding behavior at times similiar to the nearby Long-billed
Dowitchers,as well as showing typical yellowlegs behavior,as the bird
pranced around fairly quickly foraging before going
behind thick, submerged vegetation at the north end of Post Office
Lake(viewed from Lower River Rd.). We were unable(like Ken Knittle last
evening)to relocate the Stilt Sandpiper previously reported by Wilson Cady
on the 20th at this same location.Perhaps the bird is still present, but may
be foraging at a less visible location.

A list of our notable highlights follow below at selected locations and
times:

S.R.510 at MP 2.5(south of Vancouver Lake) 1:30pm-1:45pm

1 Peregrine Falcon
3 Greater Yellowlegs

Post Office Lake(viewed from Lower River Rd.) 1:55pm-2:15pm

1 Horned Grebe(observed along the Columbia River west of Lower River Rd. and
Post Office Lake)
4 EARED GREBES
1 BLUE-WINGED TEAL
7 Cinnamon Teal
5 Buffleheads
1 LESSER YELLOWLEGS
20 Long-billed Dowitchers
15 BARN SWALLOWS(observed 1 mile south of Post Office Lake resting on
telephone wires along Lower River Rd.)

Vancouver Lake 2:20pm-2:30pm

17 Western Grebes
1 CLARK'S GREBE
32 Buffleheads(observed in two seperate flocks with one flock of 18 birds
noted alone and one flock of 14 birds observed amongst a flock of
Ring-necked Ducks,Lesser Scaup,and Ruddy Ducks)
8 Sandhill Cranes(flying over the north end of Vancouver Lake)

Good birding,

Ruth and Patrick Sullivan
