Hi Tweeters and birding friends:
My sisters and I were at Dash Point Pier west of Federal Way today about
10:30. The albino Yellow-billed Loon was about 400 feet out, straight out
from the pier. It bathed and preened for a time, dove and came up much
farther out, and disappeared into the middle of the sound in about 20
minutes. This must be about the
4th year that this bird had come back to our area in the winter. A woman
fishing at the pier said that today was the first day she had seen it this
fall/winter.
It's hard to chase this bird because it covers so much of Puget Sound. In
the past, it has been seen from south of Tacoma near the Asarco plant area,
all the way up to Dash Point State Park which is north of Dash Point Pier.
I gave up chasing it long ago, but just lucked into seeing it today. Wow,
it's still looking great.
