A short lunch time bird walk at Juanita Bay Park in
Kirkland today presented me with the first White
Throated Sparrow I have seen this year.
I found it about 11:15 a.m. plucking berries from a
small yellow-twig dogwood shrub about half way between
the start of the two boardwalk trails out to the lake.
It was with a mixed flock of Song, Fox, and Golden
Crownds. It appeared to be a mature adult with
plumage coloring about halfway between Sibley's Tan
Striped and White Striped presentations.
There is a row of several yellow-twig and red-osier
dogwoods planted here and the park staff have recently
been cutting back the himalayan blackberries that were
overcoming the shrubs.
This little park is a great birding spot this time of
year. Juanita Bay is usually covered with ducks.
