At 9:30am we watched an adult WHITE-TAILED KITE hunt in a field just north of
the Centralia Steam Plant, app. at the intersection of Tono Rd and Big
Hanford. This most likely is the same one reported by Marv Breece 8/15.
After a few minutes, the bird flew further north along the Tono Rd. Six
Turkey vultures were soaring just to the west of that same site. Aside from
Canadian geese, mallards and two great blue heron, the water areas were
quiet. Starlings and cedar waxwings were everywhere. There is very little
water left in the mudflat next to the red building just south of the plant,
and one of the northern ponds looks as if it were purposely drained.

All observable from the bridge at Schaeffer Park (located outside Centralia
on the way to the steam plant) were both types of chickadees, scrub and
stellar jays, cedar waxwings, brown creepers, black-throated gray warblers
and female common yellow throats. The only birds heard or observed there
were either in the open picnic area or along the river near the bridge. The
woods were silent and we saw no birds along the trails.
