Beth,
It sounds like a nighthawk, especially when you mentioned that it was up high, but swallows and swifts also come to mind. Don't you get Swifts up Arlington way? Of course these 3, swallows, swifts, and nighthawks are stairsteps up in size, so a sense of how big it was is probably your best clue. Watch for it again tomorrow evening. When it calls, you'll know! Down here in southern Kitsap County I had nighthawks every evening for over 3 weeks.
