Hi Folks,

We've got a neat opportunity to assist with monitoring song bird populations travelling through Pierce County. Don Norman has coordinated a training opportunity. It isn't cheap, but it is an incredible way to keep important scientific data current and relevant for habitat protection. Read below for details.

Please pass onto other interested parties.

Cheers,

Passerine Bird Banding Training November 2002.

Dan Froehlich of the Burke Museum at the UW has agreed to teach an introductory banding course this November in Tacoma. This course will include 2 evening lectures on Friday night, and 5 weekend and 1 holiday of field instruction with Don Norman, a local bander, and several other sub-permitted banders providing personal training. The course will be limited to 10 persons. Ability to ID local songbirds is strongly recommended and commitment to assist in summer monitoring programs. This past April a course was given that included Woodland Park Zoo personnel and issues relating to zoos will be addressed.

Topics to be covered include:

Introduction to the purposes of banding
Local banding programs and the MAPS program
Banding as a Skill
Bird Life Cycles and Molting Cycles
Handling Birds (Net extraction, assessing condition of birds)
Banding Tools (Location, Set up and Maintenance of Mist Nets)
Terminolgy and Recording Data on Banding Sheets
Using the Pyle Guide - Aging and Sexing Birds
More on Bird Life Cycles and Molting Cycles
Bird Safety and Banding Station Operation

COURSE DATES: Nov. 1-3, and Nov. 8-11, which will consist of 2 Friday night

lectures and field work most of the day on Sat and Sun somewhere nearby to
Tacoma. There will also be a 5th field day on Monday November 11th which is
a local holiday for most folks. There may have to be some subsequent rain
dates which will be worked out for individuals.

COURSE COST: Depending upon signup, cost will be between $300 and $400,
which will include all materials (North AMerican Banding Council Study Guides
and Pyle Guide) but no travel. Some hardship cases may be possible if
funding comes through.
