I went to Portland this week to see the Vaux Swifts going into the
Chapman School chimney for the night. Thank you, Jennifer! It was a
WONDERFUL sight. I got a lot of it on video. It was well worth the
trip down there to see. The second evening I was there a Cooper's Hawk
came by who did manage to catch one of the Swifts by standing to the
chimney rim and reaching in. The flying Swifts were too fast for him.

I recommend this trip to you all. It is just breath taking. The
Audubon people there said it should go on for another couple of weeks.

Sorry for the long delay in replying -- my Oregon vacation hasn't
afforded
much email access. I'm glad other Tweeters knew the location of Chapman
School and that the Swifts were Vaux's, as I had neglected to acquire
those
important details! (Are my green horns showing?) Since people are
talking
about bird records, I should pass along that I was told that it is the
largest collection of Swifts . . . in North America? in the world? Can't

remember which. Anyway, it really was a marvelous sight, and I hope you
will
be able to see it. If you do get down to Portland, stop by the Backyard
Bird
Shop and thank my sister Nancy.
