This is the Vancouver Natural History Society's Bird Alert for Tuesday,
September 10, evening update, sponsored in part by the Wild Birds Unlimited
stores in Vancouver and North Vancouver.

Rare bird alert for a GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE. Other featured birds:
SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, AMERICAN AVOCET and FRANKLIN'S GULL.

Sightings for Tuesday, September 10:

A GREEN-TAILED TOWHEE was seen at Reifel along the west dyke in the second
bush after the turn in the road that goes away from the tower. The bird was
feeding on seed on the ground and was present until sunset. This is the 3rd
record for Vancouver, and the bird is believed to be an adult in fall
plumage. Also at Reifel were an AMERICAN AVOCET, a STILT SANDPIPER and 2
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

A SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER was again seen at the foot of 104th in Delta.

A first winter FRANKLIN'S GULL and a WESTERN GULL were at West Beach in
White Rock.

Three PARASITIC JAEGERS were at Point Roberts.

Monday, September 9:

Three BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were at the turf farm along 72nd Street in
Delta.

Reifel had 10 PURPLE MARTINS, an AMERICAN AVOCET, 2 WILSON'S and 2
RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH that was seen and heard
calling along the northeast trail.

A HORNED LARK continued at Maplewood Flats in North Vancouver.

A GREAT HORNED OWL was at the southeast corner of Burnaby Mountain Park
along with 2 PILEATED WOODPECKERS, and 2 TURKEY VULTURES were northwest of
Lougheed Mall in Burnaby.

Sunday, September 8:

At Reifel, in the west field, near the tower there were an AMERICAN AVOCET,
2 WILSON'S and 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES, and 2 COMMON NIGHTHAWKS.

14 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS were on the turf farm on 72nd Street in Delta.
