David,

the resident botanist is on the east coast, so I'm going to stick my
neck out on this; why did you say they weren't elderberries? Looks
like elderberry to me from the photos.

Those with more botanical knowledge than I are welcome to make fun of
me if I'm in error. When you're married to a botanist, it's awfully
easy to rely on "What's that, dear?", and not bother to really learn
the plants.
