Over the past three weeks, we have seen a few new arrivals on Pine Lake.
First, a female wood duck, next, an American Coot, then a Double-crested
Cormorant, and today, a female Northern Shoveler. None have hung around more
than a few hours. The Shoveler is the first I've ever seen on Pine Lake in
the two years I've lived here. The rest were typical of our winter waterfowl
in 2001, but not 2000.

My husband and I visited Marymoor last weekend, and saw 12 pairs of Wood
ducks, and a dozen Coots. Last year, we had five pairs of Wood ducks that
hung out in our yard for much of the winter. I hope they will be back soon.
Looks like winter waterfowl are headed our way!
