Hi Ho Tweets -
A Seattle Audubon trip to Grays Harbor yesterday went well with good
bird diversity under bright sunny skies, 65-70 degree temperatures and
light east winds.
We had fairly low numbers of birds, but picked up nice views at every
location we went to and in addition provided a wonderful experience for
a visitor from Wisconsin.
The Browns Point jetty in Ocean Shores had numbers of birds flying by,
although at some distance. Good views of 3 Parasitic Jaegers and a
Red-throated Loon.
We had superb views of American Pipits at the Marine View Dr turnout by
the Water Tower, but not much else there. Both Wood Ducks and Hooded
Mergansers were on the pond at the entrance to Ocean City S.P.
Nice collection of Marbled Godwits and Long-billed Curlews at Bill's
Spit - no Bar-tailed, guess it must have come in later when the
Sullivans were there (or else was hiding on the down side of the sand
bar the birds were on).
Had the usual large collection of Marbled Godwits at Tokeland - on the
flat by the road in the marina. Again no Bar-tailed. The old ramp across
the road yielded Whimbrel and Willets - these birds were scared up a
while later and the three Willets visible turned into about 15.
Best bird of the day was a bright juvenile Pacific Golden Plover in with
about 70 Black-bellied Plover, 38 Dunlin and a bunch of Western
Sandpipers. The Pacific was perfectly lighted, slightly separated from
the rest of the birds and very cooperative. Later, when it moved it
obviously had the right of way over the other birds who all moved out of
it's way.
