Ned,

I would bet the low, resonant "hoot" you heard was that of a Blue Grouse. In
addition to the series of extremely low-pitched hoots given by a displaying
male Blue Grouse, this species also has a single "hoot" that has a
substantial pause between each note. The first time I heard it, I thought it
was an owl also.
