Birders,

Yesterday, April 8, I spent about 5 hours (10 AM to 3 PM) birding
Minnekhada Regional Park and the adjacent Addington Marsh WMA in
Coquitlam, just E of Vancouver. The rain held off till about 2:30 PM,
and then appeared only as a light shower.

I came up with a combined list of 54 species for the two areas.
Interesting sightings included the following:

Double-crested Cormorant-- 1 in the lower marsh at Minnekhada-- a
little
out of place
Wood Duck-- 16 (mostly males) on the upper marsh, Minnekhada
EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL-- 1 male on the upper marsh at
Minnekhada
Northern Shoveler-- 40 scattered all over the upper marsh, Minnekhada
Ring-necked Duck-- 22 at Minnekhada, 17 at Addington
Osprey-- 3 on pilings along the Pitt River (1 pair, 1 single), seen
from
Addington Marsh (my first for the year)
Bald Eagle-- 3 at Minnekhada (2 ad., 1 imm.)
Merlin-- one flying along Oliver Road at Minnekhada-- made a pass at
some Starlings but missed; seen later at Addington
Band-tailed Pigeon-- 3 flying along Quarry Road on the W side of
Minnekhada Park
Pileated Woodpecker-- 3 at Minnekhada Park (2 seen at close range
along
Oliver Road)
Brown Creeper-- 3 heard singing, Minnekhada
Golden-crowned Kinglet-- total of 50 at Minnekhada, including 35 in
one flock
Ruby-crowned Kinglet-- lots of migrants-- total of about 30
Varied Thrush-- about 30 at Minnekhada, including 20 in one loose
flock
Hutton's Vireo-- 1 singing north of Oliver Road in the SE corner of
Minnekhada Park
Common Yellowthroat-- 1 heard singing, Addington Marsh (my first of
the year)
