I just got home from a spring break trip out to Olympic National Park. Some parts had good birding. Others didn't.

Stop 1: Dungeness NWR 4/8/03

Surf Scoter 4
White winged scoter 10
Mallards
BLACK OYSTERCATCHER 3
Common loon 5
Western grebe 1
California gull
Great blue heron 1
SHORT BILLED DOWITCHER 2
Green winged teal
Common mergansers
IM Bald eagle 1
Greater scaup
Bufflehead
White crowned sparrow 1
Double crested cormorant
RED BREASTED MERGANSER 6
I was disappointed that I didn't see any brant. That was the only bad part. The 3 black tailed deer and the many harbor seals made this a great trip.

Stop 2: Hoh Rainforest 4/9/03

Robins
VARIED THRUSH 5
Dark eyed (oregon) junco 10
Chesnut backed chickadee 5
Black capped chickadee 2
That was the best I have ever seen the varied thrush. Even with the lack of birds that is a trip you must take. If you do, be warned. This is a RAINforest. This is a place unlike any other in the U.S..

Stop 3: Cape Flattery 4/9/03

Mallards
Bufflehead
Greater scaup
RED BREASTED MERGANSER 10
YELLOW BILLED LOON 1
Common goldeneye
MA Bald eagle 5
IM Bald eagle 4
PIGEON GUILLEMOT 1
The guillemot was an exciting new bird for me. How do you pronounce "guillemot"? There was one seal. This is a great place for spotting eagles.

Stop 4: Ruby Beach 4/10/03
Double crested cormorants
California gulls
BLACK OYSTERCATCHER 2
IM Bald eagle 1
Rufous hummingbird 2
Not the best birding spot. The geology is what really amazed me.

Stop 5: Grays Harbor NWR 4/10/03

Marsh wren 5
Bewicks wren 1
Violet green swallows 2
MA Bald eagle 1
Northern harrier 2
Great blue heron 2
Mallards
Canada geese 4
Greater scaup
Gulls
Song sparrow 5
Savannah sparrow 1
I guess the shorebirds haven't come yet. Oh well. That's all for now.
