If you do a web search for Starling traps, there are
many commercial units available for just such places.
Large (4' by 4' by 4' !) "V" traps that can catch
hundreds of the buggers at a time. I wonder how
receptive the farmers might be to placement of some of
these near their feed bins, and a study about Starling
removal rates and changes in nesting success in
surrounding areas? Sounds like a good master's
project!
Except , I think I remember one of those sites
documneting just that correlation. Or was that with
BH cowbirds? I think it was BH Cowbirds and an
increased nesting success. Not sure if I have seen a
study with Starlings and cavity nesters.
Know any students looking for a project?
I bet this group could come up with the money to buy
or build a couple of traps, and then get a student to
check and "clean it out" every day. Hmmm...
