Hi Everyone--

Today 4/12 I led a group of Portland Audubon folks around the Vancouver Lake
Lowlands. Early rain gave way to fine, warm weather. We began at Vancouver
Lake Park. A singing male WILSON'S WARBLER was in the parking lot. COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS were numerous (we saw or heard at least 6, all arriving within
the last two weeks). We found two female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS, one of which,
surprisingly, was in deep woods. A single VAUX'S SWIFT was high over the
meadow north of the picnic area, and a single CASPIAN TERN flew by. Two
immature BALD EAGLES were playing in mid-air, one doing barrel rolls and
pointing its talons at the other. We don't usually see them here, but today
two WOOD DUCKS were in the slough at the north end of the park. We ended the
morning at Old Lower River Road, where a crew from the Port of Vancouver was
conducting a critter count (meaning reptiles and amphibians). In the first
slough on the right, there were at least 5 CINNAMON TEAL. At noon, one
participant and I drove north on Lower River Road to Post Office Lake, where
there are still a few SANDHILL CRANES. A pair of OSPREY are occupying the
nest platform at the refuge residence.
