FIELD TECHNICIAN JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The Land Condition Trend Analysis (LCTA) program on Fort Lewis
Military Installation, Washington is a component of the Land Management
Branch. LCTA is a program for inventorying and monitoring Army land
resources. LCTA methods collect physical and biological data from training
lands in order to relate land conditions to training activities. The
collected ecological data assists in land management decisions so that
training can continue without losing the integrity of the land.

Fort Lewis consists of approximately 63,000 acres of trainable lands
and the LCTA program has research plots in approximately 60% of this area.
The research plots are in a variety of habitats - including prairies,
forests, wetlands, and oak woodlands. The focus of the program is on
inventorying and monitoring vegetation, bird, butterfly populations and
plant communities on Fort Lewis and the effects that military training and
other land uses have on these populations.

As a member of the LCTA field crew, it is necessary to be able to
proficiently identify, both aurally and visually, Pacific Northwest avian
species and use The Flora of the Pacific Northwest (Hitchcock & Cronquist)
to identify plant species. Any previous knowledge of South Puget Sound
butterfly species and noxious weed species would also contribute to the LCTA
work responsibilities. You will also be required to participate in writing
technical reports of data collected and to give a 10-minute presentation of
these reports.

You will be required to gather scientific data; be familiar with desktop
computer programs; read a compass and clinometer; accurately read and draw
maps; be on your feet for many hours; and operate and maintain a government
4x4 vehicle. You will be obligated to work closely with three other people
for an extended period of time, work in all types of Pacific Northwest
weather, work in areas with ground bee nests, and contribute to team moral.
Additional requirements for this position are transportation to Fort Lewis
and a current WA State driver's license.

The position is a year to year contract for a 32-week period beginning 28
April 2003. The hourly rate will be between $13.00-14.00/hour. To apply
