Well, I did see the female Mandarin fly in quickly this evening from the
area they used last year, apparently to nest. She was just here for a few
minutes to get some cracked corn and flew back in the same direction. Maybe
they knew about the huge rain squall we're having now and stayed under
cover. Does anyone know if the land where they're nesting/staying can be
protected from development? I think they're going to some land up the
street that's undeveloped as yet, but has a For Sale sign on it and is in an
area that seems to be quickly going to large apt complexes. Since it's the
second season this pair has been here, and they now have an additional
female with them, it seems they're at least a rare species here and should
be protected. The male is much larger than the pictures I've seen of
Mandarins kept by bird fanciers. I know conservation is not a list topic,
so please write me off list if you have any ideas about the process.
