The Nikon Coolpix 990 is still highly regarded for digiscoping. The
optics in later models, 995 and 4500 (I own a 995) are considered
inferior to the 990 . The 990 has a resolution of 2048 x 1535 (same as
the 995) - more than adequate for excellent 6 x 4 inch prints and great
8 x 10 inch prints.

Using my Coolpix 995 I rarely use a magnification above x1.5 - x2 when
combined with my Kowa set at x20. Higher magnification means more
vibration and keeping the scope and camera steady is extremely
difficult. My best results have always been at the lowest magnification
possible without vignetting - where the circular eyepiece of the scope
becomes visible in the camera image.

If you want good results do not handhold the camera. There are a few
adaptors where the camera can easily be removed. You will only get
sharp images by using an adaptor and a very sturdy tripod.
