Didn't get to do too much birding in the Tri-City area while there this weekend, but what we did do was fun and rewarding. Saw lots of Western Meadowlarks out singing, and loads of Black-billed Magpie's. Saw Virginia Rail and a new lifer for us near the Richland Y this morning, Yellow-headed Blackbirds! There were about a dozen in one bush, with others flitting about (A bunch of RW Blackbirds were present also), making their strange honking and squeaking songs. They were stunning with their orangish yellow heads, and to see so many at once was a great reward to finally seeing them for the first time. Other than that, we saw numerous likely suspects in the sparrow families, some California Quail and Ring-necked Pheasant. Also noted 6 elk off Hwy 243 between Vantage and Richland. It was a good weekend, and I got to see my son participate in a track meet in Royal City which resulted in the season's first sun burn for me. Yay! Good birding y'all! Brett A.
