Steve Nord and I did a bit of local birding this fine morning. We first
hiked Woodard Bay trail. Then we headed to Nisqually and walked out to
McAllister Creek and did the interior boardwalk followed by a quick scan of
the Nisqually Reach at Luhr Beach boat ramp.

Birds of note:
2 R/T Loon (Luhr Beach)
6 Eared Grebe (Luhr)
3 Pelagic Cormorant (Woodard Bay)
200+ Brant (Luhr)
1 Cinnamon Teal (drake, Nisqually)
1 HARLEQUIN DUCK (still at Luhr Beach)
4 Bald Eagle (2 using the nest at Woodard Bay, harrassing the herons)
2 A. Kestrel (Nisqually headquarters, new locale for them at Nisqually)
2 Virginia Rail (Nisqually)
1 Sora (heard briefly at Nisqually)
2 Black-bellied Plover (alt. plumage, Luhr Beach)
12 Greater Yellowlegs (various sites)
1 Least Sandpiper (alt. plumage, Nisqually)
2 Dunlin (alt. plumage, Nisqually, also many at Luhr Beach mixed with
peeps-likely Westerns)
100+ Bonaparte's Gull (alt. plumage, Luhr Beach)
1 Caspian Tern (Luhr)
Band-tailed Pigeon (heard, Woodard Bay)
Red-breasted Sapsucker (Woodard Bay)
2 PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER (Woodard Bay)
15 Purple Martin (2 Luhr, 13+ at Woodard Bay)
5 N. Rough-winged Swallow (3 Woodard, 2 Nisqually)
Barn Swallow (just a note that there are still some (juv?) individuals with
very worn plumage at Nisqually)
3 Bushtit (1 nest site at Nisqually)
4 O/Crowned Warblers (3 Nisqually)
Yellow-rumped Warblers (the maples at Nisqually were dripping with
Yellow-rumpeds, both subspecies and sexes were present in about equal
numbers...couldn't even estimate the number. Steve did find one female
which seemed to show some indications of hybridization, it had the wing bars
and throat color of Myrtle but had no face pattern or supercilium and a
limited area of white on the throat...not extending up towards the nape)
1 BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER (singing at Woodard Bay)
1 Fox Sparrow (Nisqually)
4 W/C Sparrow 'gambelii' (Nisqually)
3 Purple Finch (heard at Woodard Bay)
