Twice in ten years here in the foothills of the Cascades (about 600
feet elevation about 15 miles east of Stanwood) Ive heard what
initially sounded to me like a house cat meowing from the brush, and so
I went to investigate, since we have no cats. Both times I was
extremely surprised. One was a Ruffed Grouse, apparently calling to
her scattered but nearby young. The other time I found a newborn fawn,
apparently calling to its unseen but nearby mother.
