Rob and All:
The latest (May-June 2003) Bird Watcher's Digest has some answers to
Window Strikes. In an article called 25 Most Frequently-Asked
Questions it gives a number of suggestions.
It says that falcon silhouettes work, but work best when they are on
the outside of the window. Other suggestions: Hang something on the
outside of the window like a wind chime, hanging plant, decorative
windsock. Mist the outside w/ a weak detergent or soda soln (this
decreases the reflection, but may impair looking at the view through
the window). Anything that decreases reflection helps, such as
awnings, eave extensions, and window screens. Plastic cling wrap
applied to the inside or outside of the window helps.
I really recommend this little magazine that comes out every two
months. Last month (Mar-Apr 2003) there was a great article rating
spotting scopes including the new 65mm Swarovski. The article was by
Michael and Diane Porter. And this month there is a well-written
article by Kenn Kaufman about West Nile Virus and raptors. The
magazine website is www.birdwatchersdigest.com. This is an
advertisement for it I guess, but I have no financial ties to the mag
other than I get it in the mail and enjoy it a lot.

| My students are starting to bring me window kills again and often
ask what
| is a good reliable way to keep birds from doing this? The little
hawk
| silhouettes apparently don't work well for some birds.
