Hi Tweeters,

I got a call from a long-time resident of Yakima who said he is certain he
saw a condor on Naches Heights, which is between Yakima and Naches, on April
23.

He said it was perched in an apple tree right beside the road. He stopped
after he passed it and backed up, at which time it flew into the second row
of trees from the road. He looked at it for several minutes before driving
away.

He did say he was very familiar with Bald Eagles, Golden Eagles and Turkey
Vultures. He described it as huge, much larger than an eagle, with a bald
head that was somewhere between pink and cream colored. He admitted having
difficulty putting a name to the color of the head. He did not recall
seeing any white on the wings nor did he mention seeing a numbered tag on it.

This, of course, is an incredibly odd report. When considered with the
report Dennis Paulson sent to Tweeters recently of a condor sighting in
Grant County and the call I got from a woman in the Nile area off Highway
410 three weeks ago, it causes one to wonder. Are the condor people in
California and Arizona missing one of their birds?

I am writing my weekly bird sightings report for the Yakima Herald-Republic
tonight and will mention these three reports. If there is a condor in the
area, someone else it bound to see it. Hopefully, one viewer will be me! If
so, photos will be on the BirdYak website asap.
