I assume I must have had a cross of the Red-shafted and Yellow-shafted Flicker in
my yard last Thursday morning at 8:50. The bird had a faint red crescent on the
nape and a bright red malar. I noticed yellow wing linings when it flew. It
behaved like a juvenile, sticking its long tongue through the squirrel baffle on
my black oil sunflower seed tube feeder (I've never had a Flicker do this) and
scattering seeds everywhere, but not eating any. The feathers were not as tidy
and smooth looking as most adults. I did have a Yellow-shafted male in the yard
last winter, and other Red-shafted male and female sightings. There was Flicker
nesting activity next door this spring. Please let me know if you think my
assumption may be incorrect.
