Lots of vultures flapping around, it seems . . . a good thing. Following
are early-to-mid summer reports of turkey vultures in Washington, British
Columbia, and Oregon for July 2003:

01 -- 9 kettling between Auburn and Enumclaw plus one "outside of the
kettle"; 3 at Gibsons beach, B.C.
02 -- 2 over Rosario Beach (one over the water!!); one overhead at Gibsons,
B.C.; 1 going west near Joyce; 2 near Pysht; 5 near Clallam Bay
03 -- 2 over Noble Knob near Mt Rainier/Greenwater; 12 sitting in a mostly
dead tree between Hope and Agassiz, B.C.; 2 stretching wings and legs like
they had just awakened at Gibsons, B.C.
04 -- 17 near Haney, B.C.; 3 at Rattlesnake Lake/Ledge; 35 "or so" in the
Enumclaw area; 3 at Gibsons, B.C.; 1 in southeastern Washington (?); 1 east
of Packwood; 2 west of Morton; 1 east of Oakville; 1 nine miles west of
Hoquiam; 12 at Joyce (?)
05 -- 8 soaring just west of the Julia Butler Hansen refuge; 1 sitting in a
field in the bustling metropolis of Naselle; several singles and a few
groups of two, mostly cruising the rivers in the southwest part of the
state; 3 at Gibsons, B.C.;12 circling over downtown Metaline Falls
06 -- 1 soaring near Mt. Index; 2 at Tampico in Yakima County; 1 at the
Sechelt Airport, B.C.; 127 along the highway between Campbell River and
Qualicum, B.C. (note: 16 over Big Qualicum River, the rest in the 2-5 range
or singles, generally distrubed from NW to SE.; 2 over Newton Athletic Park
in Surrey, B.C.; 4 over Cypress Provincial Park in West Vancouver, B.C.; 1
off Hwy 109, Grays Harbor
07 -- 1 at Roslyn; 1 near the Elwha Bridge
09 -- 1 circling about 5 miles west of Burlington; 1 near Haney, B.C.; 1
flying over Chehalis
10 -- 1 ten miles west of Hoquiam; 1 west of Elma; 6 west of Morton; 1 over
lily pond south of Woodland; 1 south of Kalama; 1 at the Port of Kalama
12 -- 2 at the Morse Wildlife Preserve MAPS banding station near Graham
13 -- 1 sailing due west from Littlerock; 1 west of Indian Chruch Road, Hwy 223
14 -- 2 flying low over Teepee Springs campground; 37 between Campbell
River and Victoria, B.C. (including 9 near the Nanaimo Airport and a kettle
of 8 near Buckley Bay)
15 -- 1 at Laird's Corner, Hwys 101/112; 1 at Yelm; 2 at McComb Road
Nursery (Sequim)
16 -- 1 soaring over the Pitt River, B.C.; 2 at Serpentine Fen in Surrey,
B.C.; 1 northwest of Sequim; 1 at Yelm
17 -- 1 at Oak Bay County Park; 2 circling over Yelm; 1 east of McComb Road
Nursery
18 -- 1 at Cusick; 2 circling west of the Elwha River
20 -- 1 along Hwy 31/mp 393; 1 at mp412 (between Ione and Cusick); 1 at
Damon Point; 3 at OceanShores Game Range; 4 at Tokeland; 1 flying over
Duvall; (?) at Rose's Pond on the Vernon Commonage, B.C.
22 -- 2 north of Joyce; 11 heading towards the Chehalis River west of Elma
23 -- 7 between Chinook and Skamokawa; 1 over downtown Stanwood; 1 over
Campbell Valley Park, B.C.; 1 at Port Williams Beach east of Sequim
24 -- 1 at Sequim; 1 at Laird's Corner; 1 northwest of Lougheed Mall, B.C.
25 -- 3 over the Crooked River Gorge, Oregon; 1 at Willows Ranch, Oregon; 1
west of Santiam Pass, Oregon; 1 in the Ochoco Mountains, Oregon; 2 in North
Langley, B.C.
26 -- 2 at the green bridge just before Cle Elum; 1 at Easton; 1 at East
Nelson Siding; 2 flying west from Startup
29 -- 1 flying southwest over I-5/mp63
30 -- 1 at the Port of Kalama; 1 east of Joyce

There must be lots of young turkey vultures up and about now. Watch for
those dark grey heads. Migration isn't far off. Just a month until the
birds start coming into Salt Creek.
