Hi Michael. Very interesting report. In August 1974, I was hiking above
the treeline on Three Brothers Mountain in Manning Provincial Park just
east of Hope, B.C. I had wandered off the trail and stumbled upon
(literally almost stepped on) a group of six Baird?s Sandpipers all
huddled together in a small hollow. At the time I thought it was a
pretty bizarre find but Rick Toochin and others told me years later that
shorebirds will often migrate from ridge-top to ridge-top. Yours is the
first specific report I have seen of this phenomenon. Peeps on the
peak. :-)

Subject: [bcbirdingvanisland] Baird's Sandpipers on a snowfield

Greetings,

My brother Chris was hiking in the mountains of Vancouver Island and
photographed a couple of Baird's Sandpipers on a snowfield. The images
can
be viewed at www.birdinfo.com/BairdsSandpiper_2003-08.html

Quite a few shorebird species migrate southward along the western
mountains,
with Baird's believed to move mainly along the ridges.

Cheers,
