For those of you venturing into North Mason County for Mountain Quail on
Wood's Lake Road, if that spot doesn't pan out you can try the top of Canyon Road
off North Shore Rd. on the way back toward Belfair. I live in Belfair View
Estates which starts at the top of Canyon Rd. I have consistantly seen mountain
quail near the last two switchbacks on Canyon Road, usually in the early
morning but also later in the day when there isn't much traffic on Canyon Rd. The
family on Canyon presently has four chicks just fledged and with the first
signs of their interesting cranial plumage. There was a pair feeding at my
place in late spring and it took me a while to put the pair and the other mating
calls together when I heard them in the evening.

Also, there is a pair of nighthawks every evening around 8pm feeding over my
place on Bear Ridge Rd. They have been here each evening for almost two
weeks. Bear Ridge no longer goes thru as shown on the map so pick the north half
off Kenosha Pass to find nighthawks.
