Dear Tweeters,

There have been a few interesting birds at Cockreham Island lately (beween Lyman and Hamilton in Skagit County). Yesterday, August 13, a Solitary Sandpiper was at the pond at the south end of the island. Today I watched an adult Peregrine Falcon flying around the Skagit River at the boat launch. It was carrying a Steller's Jay. The falcon was last seen flying upriver into the trees. I had immediately noticed the silence upon reaching the river this morning. Only one crow cawed, a single time. After the falcon departed, a surviving Steller's Jay started making tough-guy noises from the trees, and a Western Wood-pewee piped up. Both of these birds will be auditioning for the part of Falstaff.

Good birding,
Gary Bletsch

Yours truly,
