My nephew and I camped on Canyon Creek, about eight or nine miles in from
the Mt. Baker Highway Sunday evening, not terribly far from the town of
Glacier, to be positioned for a hike on Monday. We saw something dark and
small flying close to the water on Canyon Creek at dusk. The behavior did
not seem very bat-like and when the bats did come out to feed they were
higher over the creek. The next morning, as we were sitting back a short
ways from the creek, eating breakfast, we watched the American Dipper
freeway. There were at least seven of them roaring up the creek and then
back downstream, close to the water. One stayed near us for about five
minutes, alternately dipping in the faster water and working a small pool
built by unknown hands. It was a delightful way to start the day.
