WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN on Mt. Rainier in case there is still someone out the
there interested in searching for them.

My wife Mary Ann and I have been up to Mount Rainier hiking and camping the
last four days. We just returned home this afternoon so this sighting is a
little old.

We observed the Female WHITE-TAILED PTARMIGAN with four chicks on Monday
8/18. We found the birds east of Panorama Point. After crossing the snow
field heading east from the point the birds were located in a creek area
that has a lot of Monkey Flowers. The birds were below the trail when we
first saw them, but crossed the trail and headed up the creek feeding. The
clucking sound is a good way to find the birds.

Someone had request the GPS coordinate for the Ptarmigans. Here are the GPS
coord. for the birds we saw. They are in UTM

After finding the birds we hiked up above Panorama Point to Pebble Creek and
thought about going up to Camp Muir. We decided against that, been there
done that before. We checked this area for Ptarmigans but saw none. We
headed back down to the area where we had earlier seen the Ptarmigans but
couldn't relocate them. There were people everywhere when we returned to
this area. We had arrived at Paradise shortly after 8:00 am and weren't too
many hikers when we found the birds. I believe these birds will be in this
area for a while.

Tuesday 8/19 we hiked on the Sunrise side of the mountain. We hike to
Burroughs Mountain. We looked for Ptarmigans but saw none on this hike.
